A week of trying to solve some serious glaze problems - the trials and tribulations of ceramics - glazes blistering and so on...However one successful project was a commission to make floating faces (about the size of a dinner plate) to hang on the wall. Exquisite is the title of a group exhibition (David Walters and Friends) to be held later this month atThe William Humphreys Art Gallery in Kimberley. We were instructed to make smallish items. I received a fabulous order last week to make 25 large platters for a special function to be delivered this coming Friday.A tall order..!! The past weekend I visited an exhibition of current work by the well-known South African ceramist Charmaine Haines at the Klein Karoo Nasionale Kunsfees (Little Karoo National Arts Festival) in Oudsthoorn(about 400 km from Cape Town). Now in overcast but crisply cool London, I feel inspired by the colour details against the grey. My friend Gules whose flat I am staying in has displayed pieces of my work in a most inspiring way, combining other objects, which all work together to bring a South African aesthetic into a London flat.
